Roman Milovanov
At the Faculty of Arts History of the Russian State University for the Humanities (specialization “Cultural studies”) it became clear that Roman Milovanov would connect his life with the world of photography and advertising. As a student, he was literally obsessed with the history of fashion and fashion photography - this was expressed in a rather complex study on “Representations of body in the advertising campaign of Calvin Klein in the 1990s”.

Having decided not to connect his life with the science of art, Roman wanted to create it. His immersion into the profession began with fashion photography, where he quickly developed his style and began shooting for magazines and designers in Moscow. Inspired by the style of American documentary photography of the 1930s (Dorothea Lange), he tried to find ways to make his fashion photographs more dramatic. He set acting tasks for the models, used a black and white contrasting palette, looked for a strong character through light, costume and minimalistic setting.

Being able to tell a story through movement, editing and sound motivated Roman to study camerawork. In 2018, he graduated from «Industria»Film School with a degree of Director of photography. He realized that the ability to create an image was an important tool for him for “storytelling”, but not more. More important was the narrative behind it. He began to build up his professional body of work, combining both director and dop, associating himself more and more with the former.

Nowadays, he specializes in car commercials, lifestyle and sports stories. Finding an expressive form is a very important process for Roman. Being an advertising director, he often “mimics” the director/dop, working on the necessary pictorial tone, light, contrast, camera movement. Doing this quite successfully, he shoots commercials both as a director and as a director/dop.

His love of fashion has evolved into a passion for cars. Roman is the ultimate petrolhead. A car for him is a whole world, and also a very important tool of exploring the world. A perfect mechanism “dressed in an aluminum suit”, with its sounds, smells, and finally, its character. He sees something magical in the perception of the world through the frame of a car window and often says: “In the car, whether driving or not, we exist in a completely different reality, full of childhood dreams, inspiration, anxiety, tender love and bitter separations....”

Roman continues to develop his portfolio, constantly honing his style and practicing vision. His clients include: Coca-Cola, Monster Energy, Givenchy, Philips, Chevrolet, Haval, Cherry, Moskvich, MTS, Tele2Among the celebrities Roman has worked with are Alexander Ovechkin, Pavel Bure, Alexander Radulov, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, Dmitry Nagiyev, Nikita Efremov, Lyubov Aksyonova.
